Kia Ora my name is Debbie Penlington, I am an experienced Counsellor and Registered Nurse with a private practice based in the Tauranga CBD from where I offer face to face, online and telephone counselling services for individuals (over 18 years) and couples. I also provide supervision for those in the helping professions particularly counsellors and nurses.
I have been working with clients experiencing grief, loss and bereavement for many years, including clients impacted by suicide. I strongly believe there is no one right way to grieve and I am drawn to this work because I want to support each client to grieve in their own unique way.
Depending on the client, our work together may include all or some of the following -sharing the story of your loved one; processing and managing your thoughts / feelings around what has happened; creating safety; finding meaning in your experience; gaining strategies for caring for yourself and others impacted by the loss; dealing with the stigma often associated with death by suicide and finding ways of maintaining continuing bonds with your loved one.
I am passionate about the positive difference counselling can make in people’s lives. I use a non-judgemental, warm, empathetic and accepting approach to create a relationship of trust with my clients as the counselling work we do together is directly influenced by the strength of our relationship.
The counselling approaches I use include Strengths based; Person Centred; ACT; EFT; EIFT; Solution focused and CBT. I take special care to match the specific approach used to each clients preferences, needs and goals.
